Obituary for Melvin Woodrow Jones

Melvin Woodrow Jones, age 76, of Pelzer and formerly of Society Hill, SC, known as “Woody” to family, and “Punk” to friends, followed his wife of 57 years on their journey to be with their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, April 24, only eight days after her passing on April 16, 2015.

Although Melvin was an austere man to many, he humbled himself before the Lord and served our Mother well, even as he battled incurable cancer for 16 months.

He is survived by their three sons, Duane (Leslie) of Westminster, Gentry (Rosemary) of Holly Springs, N.C., and Jody (Michelle) of Wellford,S.C and a niece, Anne Freeman Childers (Danny) of Cheraw, S.C., eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jasper Hildred and Lucy Jones, a brother Tommy, and his dear sister Thelma.

Melvin was born in Hartsville, spending his childhood near Sonoco in the “Hell Hole” area .Melvin, a handsome young man at 18, while serving his country in the USAF at LUKE AFB, would meet Katharyn, 16, too beautiful to leave in Arizona, whisked her away to start a family, settling in his homestate of SC. He was a lifelong member of Hartsville AFM Masonic Lodge 173 .

“Woody” or “Punk”, however you knew him, will be remembered as one of the funniest, bravest, most outspoken men of our lives. He was deeply loved by family and true friends , and is already greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Palmetto Mortuary to help the family with the dual funeral expenses.
