Obituary for Miriam Joan McMahan

Miriam Joan McMahan, 59, of Greer, died quietly at her home on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, after a long battle with cancer.

Joan was the daughter of Milton and Miriam McMahan, of McMahan Shoes, in downtown Greenville, Spartanburg, and Asheville.

Joan attended Christ Church Episcopal School then transferred to Wade Hampton High School. For years she taught at Palmer School of Dance in Greenville and worked with Dance Makers. Later Joan owned a dance studio in Rincon, Georgia named “A Dancer’s Place”. Joan loved children with a passion: at dance studios, in after-school programs, and with her nieces and nephew. In addition to her love of children, another of Joan’s endearing traits was her concern for others more than herself.

Joan is survived by her lifelong, loving companion, Ross Capell of Greer; sister, Jane (Daniel) Parker; niece, Melissa (Kyle) Scoble, and their children Parker (age 3) and Eden Grace (due in June); nephew, Nathaniel Parker, all of Knoxville; and nieces Meredith McMahan and Melinda McMahan, of Greenville, and many dear cousins.

Service will be held at 2:00 on Sunday, May 31, 2015, at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1901 Wade Hampton Blvd, Greenville, SC.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to Cokesbury United Methodist Church for their Recovery program. Cokesbury UMC, 9919 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37922.
