Obituary for Walter Preston Phillips

Walter "Walt" Preston Phillips, 72, of Pickens, was called to his heavenly home on Friday, February 5, 2016 after a battle with a long illness.

His devotion to his wife and family, along with his firm belief in God, supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace. He passed peacefully in the comfort of his home on Pumpkintown Highway.

Walter was the son of the late Marvin and Lois Phillips, also of Pickens. He served his country as a member of the South Carolina National Guard.

Walter was blessed with a large and loving family. He married his wife of 41 years; Mary Carolyn Jenkins, of Harrisburg, Arkansas in October of 1974. He was a faithful husband, loving father, and a true friend and neighbor. He was always willing to help those in need. He is truly missed by his family, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends, who take comfort in the knowledge that he is at peace with his Creator.

Walter is survived by his wife, Carolyn Phillips; his sons, Bill (Debbie) Phillips, Tracy Peel, David Phillips, and Preston (Emma) Acatitlam; his daughters, Deborah Combs, Sonya Romero, and Nancy Phillips; his 19 grandchildren; his 11 great-grandchildren; and his brothers, Wallace and Leonard Phillips.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sybil E. Suary; his brother, Edward Phillips; and his grandson, William Travis Peel.

A private family viewing will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2016 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at The Palmetto Mortuary, followed by a family meal served at Pickens Church of God at 5:00 pm.

The family will be at their respective homes.

The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to Juanita, Christie, and all the members of Lutheran Hospice of South Carolina.
