Obituary for Richard Eugene Irvin

Richard Eugene Irvin
Richard Eugene Irvin, 93, of Simpsonville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 2, 2017. He will be remembered as a man of prayer and faith in Jesus Christ. His faith was evident in the love he showed to his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Richard was born the younger of two children on November 25, 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Samuel Christopher Irvin and Beulah Margaret Irvin nee Dibert.

He enlisted with the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17. As a Private First Class, he served as a Radar Operator with the 4th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, part of the 1st Marine Division. He was engaged in action in the Pacific Theatre, at the Battle for Peleliu and Vela Lavella, with the N Zac troops from New Zealand.

After the war, he attended Temple University in Philadelphia, and married his sweetheart, Hazel Jean Myers on Valentine's Day 1947. After graduation, Richard was hired by Bar-Ray Products as a Product Engineer in 1951, where he worked as a faithful employee until his retirement in 1986. He was an active leader for 14 years with Christian Service Brigade as well as a Trustee at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in Malvern, New York.

After his retirement, he served as a Deacon at Arden Presbyterian Church in Arden, North Carolina, and was active in the Christian Businessman's Association in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He had a heart for God and for His Kingdom, and would say that "If there is anything to praise, it is the Grace of God found in Jesus Christ."

He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Jean Myers Irvin; his sons, Richard Kent Irvin and Scott Myers Irvin; his daughters, Christa Jean Gates, Lauren Kay Foster, and Beth Lorraine Moody; his 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Lorraine Thomas.

Bear hugs were his loving greeting to each member of the family at every visit, and will not be forgotten. The yearly family camping trips are the source of some of the family's fondest memories; and Richard's love of the outdoors and God's creation has been passed on to all of his children. He lived a life of humble service to God, family, country, church, and neighbor.

He will be greatly missed.
