Obituary for Dorothy Hontz Brown

Dorothy Hontz Brown
Dorothy Hontz Brown, 88, of Mauldin, passed away on Wednesday, May 16, 2018.

She is survived by her daughters; Linda Lambert, Judith Lambert, and Lisa Lagrone (James), her siblings; Edith Stephens, Alice Lengel (John), and Janet Shoemaker, her grandchildren; Jacqueline Coombe, Candice Short (Richard), Richard Coombe, and Christine Lagrone and her great-grandchildren; Alexander Bailey, Robert Addams, Jordan Davis, Elizabeth Short and Silas Smith.

A loving mother, Dorothy raised three successful daughters on her own. She also enjoyed spending time with her many nieces, taking the whole group on a camping outing. Laughter and smiles still erupt at the memories. She loved her many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and all the greats.

As a coworker, she met many people and made many lifelong friends having lived in Pennsylvania, Washington DC, California, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Canada, and South Carolina where she made her home for the last 45 years. She met many people working as a stenographer, telephone operator, factory seamstress, waitress, and finally as an assistant manager at the SC Unemployment Security Commission. As an entrepreneur, she opened her own sewing and fabric sales shop in Tunkhannock in the 50's and continued sewing throughout her life.

Sewing brought her into the circle of Nimble Thimble Quilt Guild, where she made many special friends who were kind to her in her final months. She truly enjoyed making many beautiful quilts and gifted many to friends and family who treasure them.
As a sister, she was the eldest of four. One of those Hontz girls, including Dorothy, Edith (Jack) Stephens, Alice (John) Lengel, and Janet (Richard) Shoemaker, it was always an event when they got together. Always missed was brother James who passed in a tragic accident while in service to his country.

Dorothy will be remembered for her dry humor and wit as well as her beauty of face and soul. She had a tender spot in her heart for mothers who struggle to raise children on their own and volunteered as a guardian ad litem. She hoped that instead of flowers, donations would be made to charities that support them.

In addition to her family, she had a special relationship with Judy and Joe Parker of Simpsonville and Jean Jones of Mauldin.

She was preceded in death by her brother James Hontz and her parents Daniel and Alice Hontz.
