Obituary for Charles Mappus
Charles E. Mappus, 87, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2020.
He is survived by his daughters, Sherrie Foster (Michael), Sandra Long (Charles), Linda Wilkerson (Bert); siblings, Fred Mappus, Julian Mappus, Wilma Mappus; grandchildren, Michael Foster (Carmella), James Foster, Katherine Rosner (Sean), Charles Long (Heather), Megan Wilkerson (Chris Barrow), and Jake Wilkerson (Amanda); great grandchildren, Kendall, Gabriel and Elijah Foster, Holly, Rose, and Quinton Dodds, Molly and Jackman Rosner, and Evee Long.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. T.W. Mappus.
Charlie was born and raised in Charleston where he took his first job as a carrier for the News and Courier. He graduated from Charleston High School and joined the Army where he served in the First Cavalry Division during the Korean War. Upon his return he married Carolyn Louise Peeler and they had 3 children. He was hired by the Charleston Naval Shipyard as an Apprentice Machinist, where he worked his way up through the Locomotive Shop, Optical Shop and Nuclear Inspection Division. He retired as a Ships Progressman.
After retirement, Charlie enjoyed sailing and living on his boat at Buzzards Roost Marina. He was a long time member of The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, the B.P.O.E and a volunteer at the Dock Street Theater. His favorite pastimes were traveling, activities at the James Island Senior Center, and Sunday dinner with friends at Gary’s. “Pop” always enjoyed good beer and cheap wine when shared with friends. He spent his last 4 years
in Greenville to be closer to family, where he was welcomed by St James Episcopal Church.
Charlie will be most remembered for his love of family, his soft spoken manner, his humor, intelligence and incredible vocabulary.
His ashes will be inurned in a family service at St. James Columbarium in Greenville.
Family and close friends will gather to pay our respects and share memories. Donations may be made to Wren Hospice and the America Cancer Society.
