David William Carroll, 84, of Greer, South Carolina, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 10, 2022, surrounded by family and friends after a brief illness.
Born in Natick, MA on August 9, 1938, he was the youngest of two children of the late Richard and Roseanne Burgess Carroll of Holyoke and West Springfield, MA, respectively. When he wasn’t at school or getting into mischief with childhood friend Frankie, time was spent helping at his father’s corrugated container business, summering on Cape Cod, or attending Camp Monomoy (MA) where he undertook his role as line leader very seriously. David went on to graduate from Cranwell Preparatory School, followed by Boston College and American International College where he received a bachelor’s degree in education.
David retained his exuberance for life until the end and will be remembered for his love of playing ice hockey from a wee age to college, competitive shooting, and volunteering as scoutmaster, and coaching and refereeing ice hockey with esteemed friend Teddy Shore. His ultimate passion was golf, learned at an early age and enjoyed throughout his life with business associates and friends. Many fond memories were made on and off the course with special friends Jim B., Steve, and Tom.
His 40+ year career with New England Container and St. Joe Paper where he served in various leadership roles, took him from MA, through VA, NC, and finally to SC concluding as general manager for St. Joe Paper in Laurens. David loved to travel with his family and friends, but especially to the beach – any beach - where you were likely to run into him (literally!) while he strolled, head down, looking for unique shells, a tradition his grandchildren happily carry on today. He was a devoted Father and friend and never met a stranger.
David will be deeply missed but always remembered by beloved friend and companion, Kathy Steading having recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of adventures and laughter; brother, Richard P. (Carol S.) Carroll whose love and an unbreakable bond was his rock; his four children – each of whom he wholly loved and was immensely proud of: Tracy (Gary) Williams, David O. Carroll, Chris (John) Treadaway, and Bill (Lisa Bass) Carroll, and “adopted” daughter, Aimee; 11 treasured grandchildren who kept him young at heart: Daniel (Katie) Pomerleau, Stephen Pomerleau, Aaron (Julie) Williams, David (Tabitha Trader) Williams, Lisa (Kyle) Stewart, Sean (April) Treadaway, David Treadaway, Liz Carroll, Abbie Frye, Madison Shirley, and Matthew Shirley; 13 great-grandchildren; and two nieces. He was also a doting dad to schnauzers, Darcie and Milo, who, in return, were his loyal and exuberant companions and protectors to the end.
David was predeceased in death by nephew, Richard G. Carroll; niece, Susan E. Carroll; and grandson, Bryan Williams.
A memorial funeral mass will be celebrated 1:00 PM Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 1209 Brushy Creek Rd, Taylors, SC 29687. Please join the family for a 3:00 PM Celebration of Life reception at the River Oaks clubhouse, 124 River Oaks Road, Greer 29650.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Harley, Tosha, and Frances of Pruitt Hospice whose loving care made it possible for David to pass peacefully at home with family and friends by his side.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Greenville County Animal Care, 328 Furman Hall Road, Greenville SC 29609; or Pruitt Hospice, 1626 Jeurgens Court, Norcross, GA 30093.
