Obituary for David Nelson Gossett

David Nelson Gossett died peacefully at his home in Greenville, SC, Monday, January 18, 2021, after a short illness, his loving wife Kyla at his side. David was born, August 25, 1958, son of Ernest Christian and Marilyn (Nelson) Gossett in Dunkirk, NY. On May 1, 1993, David married Kyla Goering who survives of the home. The couple shared 27 short years together.

A 1976 graduate of Dunkirk High School, David completed his prerequisites at SUNY-Fredonia from 1976 to 1979, transferring to Tri -State College in Angola, Indiana, where he graduated in 1981 with a BS in Civil Engineering. He began his 34-year career in the aviation industry with Boeing Wichita in the summer of 1981 and transferred to Boeing Seattle in 1996. As a Boeing employee, he served as a metal fatigue stress analyst for Air Force One and the 777. In 2000, David accepted a position with Lockheed-Martin of Greenville, SC, as a lead stress engineer with D-3 Technologies and rounded out his career as a contract engineer with Aeronautica, retiring in September of 2015.

David often recalled fond memories of his boyhood home located footsteps from Lake Erie and countless games of baseball, softball, and tennis at Point Gratiot Park. He was an avid tennis player in high school and college, but he especially excelled at Ping Pong, never turning down the opportunity to challenge unsuspecting opponents. A loyal New Yorker, David followed the Buffalo Bills, but he was a college football enthusiast at heart, a faithful fan of the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Clemson Tigers. David enjoyed traveling with Kyla on road trips including to the Cascade Mountains and shoreline of Washington state, many Civil War battlefields, beaches along the Atlantic coast, and many trips back to upstate New York in the autumn to buy maple syrup and apples to share with his friends and in-laws.

David is also survived by his mother, Marilyn Gosset of Dunkirk, NY; his brother, Jeffrey (Betty) Gossett and sister, Sandra (Henry) Jensen, all of Fredonia, NY; brothers-in-law, Jay (Shawn) Goering of Keller, TX and Schuyler (Melody) Goering of Miltonvale, KS; sister-in-law, Anneliese (John) Homan of Sedalia, MO; nephews: Matthew (Emily) Homan of Overland Park, KS, Jayce Goering of Keller TX, and Marc Schmidt of Wichita, KS; nieces: Danielle (Joseph) Mucha of Winter Garden, FL, Alycia (Bryan) Bongiovanni of Fredonia, NY, and Ashleigh (Tim) Noland of Sedalia, MO; four great-nephews and two great-nieces. David’s father preceded him in death.

Due to Covid-19, memorial services are planned with family members later this year.
