Frank was born and lived the majority of his life in Kansas City, MO. In 2013 he and his wife Beverly moved from Kansas City to South Carolina. He was married on two different occasions. First marriage was to June Darnell and her children Deborah Ann and Michael James Herman for approximately 11 years. Sometime after, he married Beverly Buttrey-Darnell which continued for 27+ years until her death in 2016. This union included Beverly's children, grandchildren, and their families. Frank was a devoted step-father, grandfather, and uncle who loved to entertain family and friends with his great singing voice. He especially enjoyed singing Irish ballads and would belt out a rendition of "Danny Boy" upon any request. He frequently sang at family functions and loved his side job as a DJ where he would wow the crowd with his style and wit.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife Beverly, and first wife June, parents Jim and Ora (Juanita) Darnell, step-son Michael, and sister Delores.
