Obituary for Gregory Chaffin Cornwell

Gregory Chaffin Cornwell, 67, of Greenville, SC, went peacefully to Heaven on October 27, 2020. Greg was a devoted husband to Anne Anthony Cornwell, his wife of 38 years. He was also a wonderful father to their son, Benjamin Scott Cornwell of Tega Cay, SC.

Greg was born in Baltimore, MD to the late Jeptha Eli Cornwell and Yvonne Gigere. After 35 years Greg recently retired from Roper Mountain Science Center where he served as: Curator of Education, Director, and Planetarium & Public Program Specialist.

Greg was an active member of Fellowship Greenville, where he served on the tech team. Previously he was a member of Shannon Forest PCA congregation, where he taught children’s Sunday School and assisted with Youth Group.

Greg possessed a servant heart and was always available to help and serve others. He organized the Keep it Clean and Have Fun project, which was responsible for the draining and cleaning of Oak Grove Lake in Greenville. Many people are so blessed by the completion of this project.

Ivybrooke subdivision residents in Greenville were blessed to have Greg as President of the homeowner’s association. He was able to complete numerous long-term projects through his excellent leadership and hard work. Greg helped to organize renovations for a returning missionary couple’s home this year.

Greg was an enthusiastic lover of nature and was passionate about sharing his knowledge of God’s glorious creation with young and old alike. Being outdoors, hiking, kayaking fishing, leading Furman educational trips to Costa Rica, Alaska, South America, Hawaii, and local trips to NC, SC, and GA were activities Greg truly enjoyed. He was also a volunteer usher at the Peace Center in Greenville.

In lieu of flowers, Anne is requesting donations be made to the Piedmont Women’s Center in Greenville, SC or to Samaritan’s Purse Ministries. Thank you very much!
