Obituary for Harry Alexander Ohlson

Harry Alexander Ohlson Jr., 75, of Pickens, SC, passed away on February 2, 2022.
Harry was born on August 21st, 1946 to Harry and Ina Ohlson in Rockford, Illinois, and was their only child. After graduation from West High School Rockford, IL, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from John Brown University in 1969, a Master of Arts degree from Maranatha Baptist Bible College in 1982, and a Doctor of Religious Education degree from Covington Theological Seminary in 2003.

In 1970, he married Linda Carlson who grew up close to him in Rockford. Harry and Linda pursued their education together completing similar degrees from John Brown, Maranatha, and Covington. Harry and Linda had four children: Julia, Jenene, Jared, and Jonathan.

Harry was dedicated to providing Christian education and his heart was especially close to those the education system was failing. After graduating from Maranatha, he and Linda moved to Pickens, SC where he took the position of school administrator at Miracle Hill. Eventually, he also took on the responsibility of their Children’s Home. In the mid-nineties, Harry served in the role of administrator of Trinity Christian School in Piedmont, SC after which he started Mt. Carmel Christian School in Easley, SC. In 2003, Harry and Linda founded Soaring Eagles Christian Academy in Pickens, SC, where he worked as administrator and teacher until his death in 2022.

While Harry’s official title was usually administrator, he was always a teacher at heart. He educated his students in the classroom, on the sports field, and just in life. The common statement heard from many of his students is “I wouldn’t have made it through high school if it wasn’t for him.” This clearly is the result of Harry’s hard work and genuine relationships for which he will long be remembered.

Harry was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Ina. He is survived by his wife, Linda (Carlson), and their four children: Julia (Leroy) Eldred, Jenene (Tim) Giaffis, Jared Ohlson, and Jonathan (Jennifer) Ohlson. Harry is also survived by three grandchildren: Madison Giaffis, Mason Giaffis, and Ellie Fair. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Griffin Baptist Church 1629 Pumpkintown Highway Pickens, SC 29671 on February 13th at 3:00 PM.
