Obituary for Joyce Evelyn Godfrey (Parker)

Joyce Evelyn Parker Godfrey died peacefully at her home in Taylors, SC about noon, Sunday, January 3, after a long illness of Lewy Body Dementia.

Born January 4, 1936, in Greenville, SC, she was the daughter of Frank H. Parker, and Lucy Landreth Gaddy. Her grandparents on her father's side were John Henry Parker and Mary Gilreath, and on her mother's side were Thomas Gaddy and Nevada Wheeler.

Mrs. Godfrey worked in Greenville and Spartanburg cotton mills for over 20 years before changing professions working in food service and sanitation for Furman University, eventually operating her own cleaning business.

After two marriages she met her life partner Jack Gore in 1976, and they built a wonderful life together, paying off their home just last year. Jack has always been very devoted to her, and by her side, taking care of her during these past few years of illness.

Joyce Godfrey was a kind, funny, hard-working, honest woman, devoted to her family, always putting the needs of others above her own. If she found a $20 bill in the street she would turn it in to the nearest cashier. She was quite compulsive about keeping her house neat and clean. Besides flower gardening, and antique collecting, she loved music, and variety television, especially figure skating shows. She always pulled for the underdog, and she felt people of all races and cultures oughta be treated fairly. Though not a Church goer, she was a believing Christian, and her pleasant disposition made her well liked by those who knew her, although she often felt shy around crowds.

She is survived by her loving partner of 44 years; Jack Gore; brother, Douglas Parker, of Greenville, SC; sons, Ronnie (Kim) Godfrey, and Rickey (Susan) Godfrey, of Nashville, TN; Marty Godfrey, of Greenville, SC; grandchildren, Gabriel Godfrey, and Heather Godfrey, of Nashville TN; Julie Smith, Paxton Cox, Deric Cox, Autumn Welch, Harmony Patton, Chasity Godfrey, and John Michael Gore all of Greenville, SC; and numerous great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. Preceding her in death besides her parents were brothers, Clay Wilborn Parker, of Norfolk, VA, Paul Parker, of Greenville, SC, her daughter Donna King of Greenville, SC, and step son Dean Gore.

Because of COVID, a celebration of life event for Joyce will take place by early spring, to be later announced!
