Obituary for Karen Michelle Barnette Hagman

Karen Barnette Hagman of Greenville, SC, age 49, passed away at home peacefully on April 5,
2023 after a brief but arduous struggle with pancreatic cancer.

Born on July 23, 1973 in Pensacola, Florida, Karen was the daughter of Randy and Cindy Barnette, and the late Victoria Barnette. She carried her light to Greenville, South Carolina in 1998 and brightened the lives of all who knew her. Karen was an avid reader, loved her pets, baking, and valued spending time with her friends, family, and loved ones above all else. She will be forever remembered as someone who provided unconditional love to her family and for her selflessly giving spirit. Known as “Mama Karen”, she was always ready to offer a hand to
those in need, a safe space for those who were struggling, a kind ear when someone just needed to be heard. Her children remember her as being willing to drop everything at the last minute to get a grandchild to practice or to bring them home when a parent was running late, and as long as she had a dollar to give, she was ready to give it away. Lighthearted by nature and forgiving to a fault, Karen loved to laugh, to share joy, and make all those around her smile.

Karen is survived by her husband, Bobby Hagman, her sons Jason Hagman (Sylvedra Hagman), Justin Hagman, and her daughters Patricia Gilligan (Robert Gilligan) and Kayla Hagman (Ryan Bratton), her grandchildren Destiny Larsen (Alyssa Larsen), Ayden Larsen, Khalil Hagman, Gracee Hagman, Claire Gilligan, and Katriella Hagman, her honorary daughters Brittney Santana and Jennie Conboy, and her father, Randy Barnette (Cindy Barnette). She is also survived by her aunt Karen Sue Catlett. Karen is preceded in death by her mother Victoria Barnette and her brother, Steven Barnette.

Visitation will be held on April 15, 2023 between 1 and 2 PM at the Palmetto Mortuary, followed by a memorial service between 2 and 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Greenville Cancer Society (113 Mills Ave, Greenville, SC 29605).

Karen and her family are so grateful for the support given to them by the community, work family, doctors, nurses, techs, and other hospital and hospice teams that worked so hard to provide care to her and comfort to her loved ones. Karen told everyone that she wanted to be celebrated, not mourned at her death. It is with that notion in mind that the family offers one of her favorite quote from Dr Seuss as she carries her light home: We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love!
