Obituary for Kathryn Forsythe

“And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested.”
1 Chronicles 4:10

This is the prayer that Bill and I prayed daily together for a few months in 2001. We thought we knew what we were asking for: Lord, bless us with expanded ministry opportunities, let us host more church groups in our large home...that kind of thing. But boy did He expand our territory...He took us to places we had never been, nor
would ever have asked to go to when, after 911 we and many others had an unexpected addition to our family:

Kathryn Lauren (Katy) Forsythe was born July 27, 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was our one and only surprise baby after 10 years of marriage...and what a surprise! She was welcomed with great excitement and love and cluelessness.

After 15 months Katy suddenly lost her verbal skills and hand use, but that just meant that she would learn to communicate from the depths of her spirit through her eyes. She was able to sense the emotional needs of others. Katy had an uncanny ability to see some silent person in need. If she could get herself over to them, she would simply touch them, look into their eyes and without a spoken word, help them to heal. Those who knew Katy well, have no doubt that her spiritual sight was superb. She expanded our territory in things of the spirit like nothing else in our lives.

Katy was an amazing teacher. She taught us perseverance, gentleness, patience, kindness, peace, joy, and most of all love. As a very young child, she demonstrated patience beyond her years and taught us to aim for that too. Katy had the gift of evangelism and, like Francis of Assisi, believed in preaching the
gospel everywhere she went, and if necessary using words. Katy never found it necessary. Her big spirit was full of love, joy, and peace too. Her tangible love, combined with her small stature and cuteness allowed her to approach people with the gospel of the Kingdom who were not open to us. She quickly broke down barriers
through her love and fearlessness.

Katy Forsythe lived in Nevada, Texas and lastly South Carolina. In her lifetime she traveled to Mexico, Canada, Italy and France and covered 24 US states, too. She has been on both coasts and in Hawaii twice. She had a phenomenal palate for fine foods, openness toward new things, new experiences and new people. She loved to go fast and loved the wind in her face.

Since moving to South Carolina, Katy had become a member of the David’s Table and E210 Family. A wonderful group of adults with special needs and the huge hearted, people who serve them. This group opened up a whole new tribe to us and, if you will, a whole new territory too. Again Katy put us in territory we would never have reached without her. She stretched us.

Through — or because of — Katy we were taught the intricacies and joy of homeschooling, neurodevelopment therapies, horse therapy, horsemanship, overcoming fear of man, overcoming fear of emotional intimacy, how to ask for and receive help, empathy, slowing down for the one, making choices for the good of our family, endurance and faith. And now, in this sudden stop of her life with us here, and the beginning of her new life at home with the Father, she is teaching us faith, trust and the depths of peace available to us in the Holy Spirit.
Katy leaves behind her Mom & Dad, Adel & Bill Forsythe; her brother Robby Forsythe and his family in Arizona; her sister Kerry Nau and her family in California; her 2 nephews and 2 nieces; her Grandma Mary Lea Forsythe in Oklahoma as well as aunts, uncles and many friends in 3 states, and a tremendous number of lives touched by her bright shining light.
