Obituary for Michael Eugene Cushman
Michael Eugene Cushman of Fountain Inn, South Carolina left this earth and
went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 4, 2022. Mike’s passing was
sudden, and merciful.
Mike was born in Fairfield, Alabama, just outside of Birmingham, in 1949.
Upon completion of his schooling in Hueytown, Alabama, Mike enlisted in the U.
S. Army. He was stationed first in Alaska and then in Colorado. He received an
honorable discharge. Mike attended Tennessee Temple University and Bob Jones
University. In between those educations, he had employment with the U. S. Postal
Service. His primary focus in life, however, was his love of the Lord and Savior,
Jesus Christ. Mike spent a piece of every day reading scripture, exploring his
relationship with his Lord and growing in his Christian walk. No matter the
challenges he confronted, his faith in the Lord’s plan for his life was unshakeable.
Mike for many years was a faithful and committed member of Victory Baptist
Church in Simpsonville, South Carolina. He cherished his fellow communicants
and friends and frequently volunteered his time and energies to promote the
welfare of the Church and its programs.
Mike loved people. He loved telling funny, and some not-so-funny, jokes.
He loved to delve into what he qualified as “perfectly useless trivia,” the subject of
which often made its way into his banter with friends and family.
Mike had a passion for photography, for woodworking, for outrageous tee
shirts, for fast cars, and Harley Davidson motorcycles. If someone had a question
about a Harley, Mike could answer it. Then again, Mike had an answer for most
any question on any topic! And he absolutely loved hot pepper on his plate.
Mike loved, and was loved by, his family. He is survived by two sisters,
June Van Slyke of Franklin, Tennessee and Jackie Nolan (James) of Shoal Creek,
Alabama. Brother-in-law, Donald W. Kimbrel of Hueytown, Alabama. Nephew
David Kimbrel of Pleasant Grove, AL. Niece Dana McBrayer of Hueytown, AL.
Niece Julie Letowski of Washington, Maine. Mike is also survived by great nieces
and nephews. Mike’s parents, Jack and Joyce T. Cushman, and sister, Donna C.
Kimbrel, predeceased him.
Longtime friends and pastors John Heffernan and Mike McClure will lead a
celebration of Mike’s life on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at Victory
Baptist Church in Simpsonville, S.C.
Mike’s family knows it would bring a smile to his face if he might be
remembered by a donation to Victory Baptist Church, or to a church of choice.
