Obituary for Nancy Erin Scott (Smith)

Today, April 30, 2023, Nancy Smith Scott, 82, took her wings, “…slipped the surly bonds of Earth And
danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.” Nancy had a full and rewarding life here on earth. She taught
Foreign Language and English in college, Junior High and High School for many years, working at Harford
Community College, Bel Air, MD, then at Spartanburg Day School and in Spartanburg School Districts 3, 6
and 7. She was certified in four languages – Latin, Spanish, French and English. Later, she earned
another master’s degree in library science and worked for the Library of Congress (Washington, D.C.) as a Cataloger, retiring in 2005.

Nancy was a singer, blessed with near-perfect pitch perception, and with her
phenomenal tonal memory could quote the alto line from practically anything she ever sang. In Spartanburg she sang with the Symphony Chorus, and in Washington she joined a semi-professional group Musikanten that toured Europe and Russia.

She is survived by Don Scott, husband, daughter Nancy (“Sissy”) Valdivia and Son-
in-Law Eligio Valdivia. She was the eldest of seven siblings that included Shelley Winkler, Wallis Berry, Peggy Freeman, Eric Smith, and Kent Smith. She is predeceased by a sister Leslie Johnson, a son Chris Haughay, and her parents James (“Red”) and Nancy Smith. Nancy had four grandchildren: Danielle Higgins,
Victor Valdivia, Ben Valdivia, Sofia Valdivia.

The family would like to thank the beautiful and caring staff at Spartanburg Regional Hospital, Spartanburg Rehabilitation Institute, Pacifica Skylyn Skilled Nursing, Mary Black Campus, and Hospice Home.

A memorial service will be held at St. Johns Lutheran Church May 12, 2023, 1:00 PM, followed by interment in the columbarium at the church. Memorial gifts may be made to St John’s Lutheran Church.

In Nancy’s words: Soli Deo gloria (“Glory to God alone”), paz para todos (“Peace
for Everyone”), hommes de bonne volonté (“Good Will to all men”). Amen.
