Obituary for Raymond John Harmer Jr.

Raymond “Ray” John Harmer Jr., 95, of Greenville, SC, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 18, 2022. He was born in Pennsylvania on March 7, 1926 to the late Anna and Raymond Harmer, Sr.

Ray is survived by his daughter, Claire Blumberg (Jim); grandsons, Jimmy (Margie) and Chris (Ellyn); and great-grandchildren: Joey, Adelaide, and Elianna. He is also survived by a brother, Ronald Harmer; and special friends from the Simpsonville Senior Center and Mauldin Senior Center Bingo Players: Michelle, Jamie, Helen, Martha, Suzanna, Margaret, and Robbie; and neighbors, Jimmy and Sue. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 55 years of marriage, Mae.

A man of strong faith, Ray attended St Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
He served with honor and pride for his country and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Ray was a Teamsters Union worker, and drove a concrete truck for over 45 years.

Ray was a fan of Phillies baseball and Philadelphia Eagles football. He loved watching old movies and listening to Frank Sinatra music, as well a big bands from the 1940s. He so appreciated kindness, the love of family and friends, and the love of his faith. Ray was always eager to help or to buy meals for someone in need. For many years, Ray enjoyed driving the train in Heritage Park, and loved to see the children’s smiles as they rode.

Ray greatly enjoyed playing bingo. He had his last bingo game on Friday, February 18, 2022. When he yelled “Bingo!,” for the grand prize, God said, “Ray, I need you to come with me. Your prize this time is Heaven. You earned it.” And his family agrees, as a good soldier, he did.

Memorial services will be held 10:00 AM Monday, March 7, 2022 at MJ “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery, 140 Inway Dr, Anderson SC, 29621. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ray’s memory to the Cancer Society of Greenville, 113 Mills Ave, Greenville SC 29605,
