Obituary for Richard Edward Ullger

Richard "Richie" Ullger, 73, of Greenville, SC, passed away peacefully October 8, 2020. He was born to Jeanne and Edward Ullger on February 26,1947, in the Bronx, NY.

Most people knew him as “The California Kid” because of his laid back nature and love of surfing. Richie was an extraordinary man who had many interests. He enjoyed watching all sports especially NFL football and golf. He enjoyed playing computer games, board games, and cards. Richie loved reading and watching biographies and documentaries and than having great discussions about what he had learned. Along with his love for books and movies he thoroughly enjoyed the arts, design, theater and history. One of Richie’s fun abilities was trivia. He had an expansive knowledge of actors, movies and music and when given a line from a movie or song he could identify it in a heartbeat. Richie always liked all genres of music but his favorite group was The Beatles. He loved to eat and was fortunate that he never gained a pound! Some of his favorite foods were Italian dishes, red meat, milk chocolate, “a half a bag of chips” and Foster’s Blue. Richie always loved being near the water- whether it be watching sunsets on the beach or sitting by the pool. He had many amazing qualities one of which was being generous to strangers and his family. Richie didn’t just give selflessly of the monetary he also gave of his time- he was an incredible listener and always let you talk without interrupting. He never judged, was patient, kind, loving and compassionate.

This extraordinary man leaves behind his wife of 23 years, Karenann; one sister, Bonnie Kerness; his best friend Mike, who he would sit and shoot the breeze with while drinking Foster’s and a shot of Tequila on Fridays after work; two sisters-in-law, Kim Matthews (Jim), and Kristina Wagner; and multiple nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins all of whom he adored and made time for.

A Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, October 25, 2020 for family and close friends.
