Obituary for Robert Ellis McQuaid

Dr. Robert Ellis McQuaid, age 87, loving husband and father, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family Friday, August 28, 2020. He was born January 4, 1933 in Belleville, Michigan, the son of Howard Bradley McQuaid and Pearl Mae McQuaid.

He graduated from Belleville High School, earned an A.B. degree from Wheaton College in Illinois (1955), a B.D. degree from Northern Baptist Seminary (1959), and a Doctor of Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary (1981). Dr. McQuaid pastored American Baptist churches at Litchfield, Michigan (1959-1960), Decatur, Indiana (1960-1964), Holly, Michigan (1964-1969), and Port Huron, Michigan (1969-1972). He served the American Baptist Churches of Michigan as the Minister of Christian Education and Camping (1972-1978), Area Minister for the Northern Area (1975-1978), and Executive Minister (1978-1983). He served as the Executive Director of the Baptist Manor from 1983 to 1995, while serving as an Interim Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Pontiac, Michigan. Dr. McQuaid served in local government in Redington Beach, Florida from 1998 to 2000.

After retirement he continued serving in numerous roles as Associate Pastor of Oakhurst United Methodist Church in Seminole, Florida; Interim Pastor at Beatitudes American Baptist Church in St. Petersburg, Florida; Senior Pastor of United Church in Tijeras, New Mexico; Interim Pastor of American Baptist Church in Pocatello, Idaho and Interim Pastor of American Baptist Church in Missoula, Montana. Robert's final post retirement activity was to manage the start-up of a homeless shelter in Greer, South Carolina.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Bobbie McQuaid; four children: James (Cheryl) McQuaid, John McQuaid, Lisa (Darren) McCall, and Steve (Tammy) Carroll; eight grandchildren: Jennifer, Stephanie, Alisa, James, Devery, Cambria, Camden, and Bailee; and three great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Howard McQuaid (1973) and Pearl McQuaid (1983); sister, Jean Evelyn Adams (2015); sister, unnamed baby girl (1924); and brother, Russel Howard (1924).

Robert and Bobbie had a passion for travel and traveled the world together. They loved the Holy Land; they organized and led numerous tour groups to Israel.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, October 3, 2020 at Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 N. Main St., Greer, SC 29650.
