Obituary for Wesley Earl VanVliet

Wesley Earl Van Vliet, 77, of Cross Hill, SC, died July 1, 2022 at Greenwood Self -Regional Hospital, Greenwood, SC. He was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on August 16, 1944 to Ethel Dubois & Wesley N VanVliet of New Paltz, NY.

Sister to Betty J. Catherwood of Ocala, FL, Wesley is survived by four daughters: Bonnie Van Vliet of Cross Hill, SC, Christine Schumski (John P.) of Simpsonville, SC, Kimberly Sheehan-Jones (William) of Palm Coast, FL, and Ashley VanVliet of Cape Canaveral, FL; grandchildren: Nicholas (Shelby) of Palm Coast, FL, Thomas and Ryan Rugar of Cross Hill, SC, John M Schumski (Summer) of Metter, GA, Desiree’ and Mikayla Schumski of Simpsonville, SC, Timothy W. Sheehan & fiancé Jessica Staley of Lake Katrine, NY, Andrew F. Sheehan of Lake Katrine, NY,, Danica J Sheehan-Ackert of Kingston, NY and Noelle and Gracie VanVliet; seven great-grandchildren: Bryliane, Ashton, Mateo, and Isabella Ruger, and Kyle, Karter, and Klaire Moore; three step-daughters: Cathleen Crosson Bailey of Lake Katrine, NY, Tina Crosson-Loveday of Modena, NY, and Susanne Crosson Ziolkowski of Indian Harbor Beach, FL; nephew, Michael Catherwood (Cheryl) of South Daytona, FL. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his nephew, Richard Catherwood of Colorado Springs, CO.

The family wishes to extend special appreciation to his friend of 15 years, Raymond Dodgen of Cross Hill, SC; and special thanks to family friend, Leslea Mendrysa of Kingston, NY.

Wesley was well known for his father’s car dealership, VanVliet Pontiac in New Paltz, NY. Always the life of the party, he had a big heart and was well-loved. The love he had to the end for his companion Mickey Mouse will be forever treasured.

Graveside services will be held In the New Paltz Rural Cemetery in New Paltz, NY.
