Obituary for William Henry Gay

William Henry “Buck” Gay, 87, of Greenville, SC went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 22, exactly two months after his wife, Loretta of 65 years passed away.

Buck was born in Taylors, SC, to the late Jim and Jeanette Neely Gay. He was a graduate of Taylors High School and Furman University. He played baseball and basketball for the Paladins. He served in the Army in Germany and worked for the School District of Greenville County where he was Manager of Accounting Operations.

He was a member of Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church and previously of Shannon Forest Presbyterian Church where he served as elder and member of the school board. He enjoyed playing golf with his fellow Furman athletes and was on the committee for the Lyles Alley Golf Tournament, a fundraiser for the basketball team for many years. He was always ready to talk sports with friends, especially the Atlanta Braves.

Buck loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and Loretta loved to travel everywhere from SC beaches and scenic spots in this country and beyond.

He is survived by son, Mike (Debra) Gay, daughter, Susan (Randy) Sturgis, and son, Chris Gay; grandchildren, Will (Abby) Sturgis, Brandon (Lindsey) Sturgis, Peter (Becca) Sturgis, Melanye (Jeff) Crayton, Stephanye (Bennett) Rogers, Hilary Gay, Sully Gay, Brody Gay; great grandchildren, William Beaufort (Tripp) Sturgis III, Jack Sturgis. Eliana Rogers and Ryder Rogers; his siblings Jean Hodgens, Ann Gay, and Jim Gay.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rolling Green Village Distressed Residence Fund, Greenville.
